The Braemar Gathering: a masterclass in consistency

The end. The title says it all!

With professional admiration, the Braemar Gathering – first established in 1832 - is one of the most indicative examples of brand consistency, community and the power of showing up that we know of.

For those of you further afield, let us fill you in.

Every year (on the first Saturday of September) around 15,000 visitors descend on Braemar – a wee village of around 450 people in the heart of the Cairngorms – the Royal Family come, pipe bands fill the air, there’s tartan in abundance and athletes from around the world compete in events that have barely changed in nearly 200 years. Think: tossing the caber, putting the stone, hammer throwing and tug-o-war.

Come rain or shine (literally), the Braemar Gathering goes ahead.

A masterclass in consistency

The core identity has essentially remained the same all these years later. The format is similar, the traditions are upheld and without fail, the experience delivers on exactly what it promises.

In marketing terms, that’s a masterclass inconsistency. Not sameness because it’s “what we’ve always done”, but a clear and unwavering sense of what this thing is, what it stands for and who it’s for. The clarity and trust is what allows 15,000 people to plan their September around it, even travelling from the other side of the world.

Showing up is the strategy

There’s a temptation in business to believe that The Next New Thing will change everything. Sometimes it does but the Gathering is a reminder that the most powerful thing you can do is simply keep turning up and doing what you say you’ll do.

The right audience will come to you

…even if that means windy roads, limited accommodation options and a constant chance of rain! They come because it’s worth it.

This is something we talk about with our clients more than almost anything else. You don’t need to reach everyone – you just need to reach the right people and give them something genuinely worth engaging with. When your brand is clear, your message is honest and your offer is truly compelling, the right people will find you.

The Gathering doesn’t try to appeal to everyone. It’s unapologetically itself…and that’s why it works.

So: show up consistently, be yourself and build something that makes people come back for.  Bagpipes are optional.

If you’ve never experienced the Braemar Gathering for yourself, perhaps this is the year to see what all the fuss is about.

On Saturday 5 September 2026, Braemar will once again welcome thousands of visitors for a day of Highland games, piping, dancing, tradition and community.

And whether you go for the caber tossing, the atmosphere, the spectacle or simply to experience abrand that has been showing up consistently for almost 200 years – it’s well worth the trip.
