Summer holidays in the North East of Scotland

Summer holidays! Let’s be honest, some days it’s a beautiful, chaotic, coffee-fuelled juggle and other days? It’s pure survival.

Either way, getting out the house (with or without little people in tow!) is good for the mind and body and we’re lucky to live in such a gorgeous corner of the world!

Here’s a few of our favourite North East spots:

A walk along the river or up Scolty Hill

You knew I'd choose this! I absolutely love living and working here in Banchory and getting outdoors and enjoying the views remind me exactly why I'm here. My kids prefer to cycle the river path and I'm more than happy with that as a compromise when it means we all end up outside. It also provides a nice excuse to stop by Banchory Lodge for a bit of a refreshment!

Drum Castle (or Castle Fraser)

I can’t choose! The park at Drum Castle is great for tiring out little legs, and my kids love “Mr McGregor’s garden” at Castle Fraser. There’s nothing more wholesome than friends meeting up on the grounds with bundles of picnic mats and a selection of food for everyone to dip into. If the stars align, the kids will entertain themselves all day and the parents get a decent catch up too! Now we’re based in Perth Australia, we’ve swapped castle parks for golden sands!

A day at Balmedie Beach

Sand surfing, sea air and on a good day when the sun is shining Balmedie can feel like it’s a million miles away somewhere exotic.  Miles of beach, dunes to scramble up and wide open space to clear your head. We love it for a day out,not too far from home!

The Lord's Throat

A spectacular stretch of tree-lined road between Monymusk and Keig, following the course of the River Don, nestled at the bottom of Bennachie.  A great place to get out and challenge myself with my new hand cycle whilst enjoying the outdoors.  Followed of course by a refuel at the Foghouse. Fine cakes, excellent coffee and, when the timing's right, a whisky along with the warmest North east welcome!
